Heckler & Koch designed the SP5 as a semi-automatic, civilian sporting pistol. The “SP” prefix refers to its sporting purpose. This model is the second version of a commercial pistol based on the MP5 design.

The SP5 meets the strict definition of a civilian pistol in the U.S. It cannot be modified to fire fully automatic. Features like adjustable target sights and the absence of a foregrip further confirm its status as a commercial product approved for sporting use by the U.S. and German governments. The entire SP5 is manufactured in the Heckler & Koch factory in Oberndorf, Germany.
