Technical Guide: Preparing Your New Lapua Brass
While Lapua is the pinnacle of factory brass, the final tumbling and annealing process can occasionally leave case mouths “out of round” or slightly dented. This is a normal part of the manufacturing process and is easily corrected during your initial load prep.
3 Steps to Perfect Case Prep:
-
Straighten the Case Mouth: Lubricate the inside of the case neck and run the brass partway into your sizing die. Let the expander ball gently round out the mouth.
-
Chamfer and Deburr: Use a handheld tool to clean the inside and outside of the case mouth. This ensures smooth bullet seating and prevents jacket shaving.
-
Consistency Check: Because Lapua brass is annealed for durability, you may notice slight discoloration at the neck—this is a sign of proper heat treatment and does not need to be polished off.
The Lapua Advantage
When you choose Lapua, you aren’t just buying brass; you’re investing in metallurgical competence. By controlling the grain structure of the metal, Lapua produces cases that are harder at the base (for safety and primer retention) and more ductile at the neck (to prevent splitting).
